Topic: Generic Prednisone for Dogs - Discussion and Advice

Post #1 by PawsAndClaw (09/23/2023 10:04 AM)

Hi everyone! My dog, Max, has been prescribed prednisone for his allergies. Our vet suggested using the generic version to save some money. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there any drawbacks or benefits I should know about?

Hi PawsAndClaw! I've had several dogs on generic prednisone, and it's worked well for them. The main advantage is that its much cheaper than the brand-name version, but it should still be effective. Just make sure to check with your vet about dosage instructions as generics can vary slightly.

Thanks for the response, VetsFriend! That's good to hear it works well. My main concern is whether there could be any side effects that might not occur with brand-name prednisone.

Hello PawsAndClaw! As a vet, I can assure you that generic prednisone should have the same active ingredient and strength as the brand name. The FDA requires generics to be bioequivalent, meaning they should perform identically in terms of effectiveness and side effects. However, it's always important to monitor your dog for any unusual signs or symptoms while on the medication.

Great, thank you VetDoc87! That helps a lot. One more questionif Max is on generic prednisone long-term for his allergies, are there any specific things I should watch out for?

Hi PawsAndClaw! Long-term use of corticosteroids like prednisone can have side effects such as increased thirst and urination, changes in appetite, weight gain, or issues with the immune system. Keep an eye on these things and report any significant changes to your vet.

FurryHelper is right. Long-term use can indeed lead to some of those side effects, so regular check-ups with the vet are essential to monitor your dogs overall health. Your vet might also suggest periodic blood tests to ensure everything is in order.

Thank you both, VetDoc87 and FurryHelper! I feel much better informed now. Just want to make sure Max stays healthy while managing his allergies. Will schedule regular check-ups with the vet as suggested.

Glad to hear that, PawsAndClaw! Regular monitoring is key when dealing with long-term medications. Also, make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise and a balanced diet to support their overall health while on prednisone.
