Forum Topic: Doxycycline at Shoppers Drug Mart

Posted by: SunnyDay82

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to buy some doxycycline from Shoppers Drug Mart but I am not sure about the right dosage and when it should be taken. Anyone have experience with this? Also, how does one get a prescription for it?

Thanks in advance!

Hello SunnyDay82,

Doxycycline is an antibiotic commonly used to treat various bacterial infections such as acne, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and even certain types of pneumonia. It's also prescribed for travelers going to areas with malaria risk.

Regarding the dosage, it typically varies based on what you're treating. For example:- Acne treatment: Usually 50 mg once or twice a day.- UTI or respiratory infection: Typically 100 mg twice daily.- Malaria prophylaxis: Often 100 mg daily.

It's essential to take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor and on an empty stomach (at least one hour before or two hours after food) for optimal absorption. Also, dont forget to drink plenty of water with each dose.

For getting a prescription, you'll need to see a healthcare provider who can evaluate if doxycycline is the right choice for your condition based on your medical history and symptoms. You can visit your primary care doctor or even an urgent care center where they can prescribe it after a consultation.

Hope this helps! Let me know if there are any more questions!

Thanks DrFriendlyMD, that's really helpful. Is doxycycline available at all Shoppers Drug Mart locations? Also, does anyone here have tips on dealing with potential side effects?

Hey SunnyDay82,

Ive used doxycycline in the past and its usually readily available at most Shoppers Drug Mart locations. Just make sure to call ahead or check online because stock can vary sometimes.

As for side effects, here are a few tips:- Sun Sensitivity: Doxycycline can increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Always wear sunscreen with SPF 30+ and consider using protective clothing.- Digestive Issues: If you experience nausea, take the medication with a small snack or milk. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach if this becomes a problem.- Dizziness or Headaches: Stay hydrated and avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the drug affects you.

I hope these tips help! Its always wise to discuss any side effects with your doctor to ensure they are manageable.

Great points, HealthyHiker101!

SunnyDay82, in addition to what HealthyHiker101 said, it's important to note that:- Antacids and Calcium Supplements: Do not take doxycycline with antacids or calcium supplements as they can interfere with the absorption of this medication.- Avoid Dairy Products: Similarly, avoid dairy products like milk and cheese when taking doxycycline for the same reason.

If you experience any severe side effects such as severe headache, vision changes, or trouble breathing, seek medical help immediately. Also, if the infection persists or gets worse after starting the antibiotic course, contact your healthcare provider right away.

Feel free to ask more questions here or consult with a pharmacist at Shoppers Drug Mart for further guidance!

Absolutely SunnyDay82! And remember, always finish the full course of antibiotics unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. It helps prevent antibiotic resistance.

Stay healthy and take care!
